About the Book
The story follows Gardenpath, a graduate student who belongs to an ancient civilization of intelligent slime molds living between the stars. Gardenpath hopes to earn academic recognition by discovering something new about the universe.
During their research, Gardenpath travels to a distant planet that other scientists consider lifeless. However, the planet turns out to be full of living creatures with their own languages, cultures, and communities.
Curious about these unfamiliar beings, Gardenpath changes their shape to resemble the planet’s dominant species. This allows them to explore the local world and learn more about its inhabitants.
During this journey, Gardenpath meets Murtis, a woman who lives in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Murtis welcomes the strange visitor and introduces them to her community. As their friendship grows, Gardenpath begins to question their original goals and discovers that life offers more than academic success.
However, Gardenpath’s discoveries also bring difficult questions about scientific responsibility, cultural differences, and the ethics of studying other forms of life. With danger approaching Pompeii, Gardenpath must decide what matters most: personal achievement or helping the people they have come to care about.
The novel combines unusual alien biology with ancient Roman history, creating a thoughtful story about connection, understanding, and the meaning of life.
