How to Configure DKIM in Google Workspace

DKIM provides a way for validating a domain call identification that is associated with a message through cryptographic authentication. The identification is impartial of other electronic mail identities, along with the writer’s From: Subject.

How does DKIM work?

1. Generate DKIM keys

Your email provider, such as Google Workspace, generates two keys:

  • Private key → stays with Google and is used to sign outgoing emails.
  • Public key → published in your domain’s DNS as a TXT record.

2. Google sends an email

When Google Workspace sends an email from your domain, it uses the private DKIM key to create a digital signature.

3. Recipient receives the email

The receiving mail server sees the DKIM signature and looks up your domain’s public key in DNS.

4. Signature is verified

The recipient’s mail server uses the public key to verify the signature.

If the signature matches:

✅ The email was authenticated successfully.

If it doesn’t match:

The message may have been modified, or the email may not have been authorized by your domain.

Why DKIM is important

DKIM helps:

  • Prevent email spoofing
  • Improve email authentication
  • Protect your domain’s reputation
  • Improve email deliverability
  • Reduce the chance of legitimate emails being treated as spam
  • Work together with SPF and DMARC

One important point: DKIM does not encrypt the email. It provides authentication and integrity checking.

For your Google Workspace article, I’d explain it in this simple sequence:

SPF → DKIM → DMARC
