About the Book
The story follows an unnamed man who moves into Kirkhill, an isolated house on the North York Moors, after a painful divorce. Hoping to find peace and begin a new chapter in his life, he is initially pleased that the house is furnished and still contains many belongings left behind by its previous owners.
However, Kirkhill is far from an ordinary home. As the weather grows colder, strange things begin to happen. Objects seem to move or disappear, unfamiliar figures appear nearby, and the sound of a huge electrical pylon becomes increasingly disturbing.
The new owner discovers the diaries of Arthur and Caroline Sanderson, the couple who previously lived in the house. Through their writings, he begins uncovering a tragic history involving isolation, paranoia, and death.
As the boundaries between past and present become increasingly uncertain, he must confront the possibility that Kirkhill holds secrets far more frightening than he imagined.
Joanne Harris creates a chilling atmosphere while exploring memory, aging, and the ghosts that people carry within themselves.
